The EUFOFINET project is an INTERREG IVC capitalization project in the field of prevention and management of forest fires financed by the ERDF.

The project duration is 24 months starting from October 2010 until October 2012.

“The Interregional Cooperation Programme INTERREG IVC, financed by the European Union’s Regional Development Fund, helps Regions of Europe work together to share experience and good practice in the areas of innovation, the knowledge economy, the environment and risk prevention. EUR 302 million is available for project funding but, more than that, a wealth of knowledge and potential solutions are also on hand for regional policy-makers.”

The main objective is the transfer of good practices to improve national or regional policies on both, forest fires risk prevention and management, focusing on preparing the transfer of good practices already identified into the Operational Programme of the partners.

This main objective is split in the 5 following sub-objectives:

1) From a stock of identified good practices, exchange models and good practices creating a first step of network of national or regional competent services sharing knowledge, expertise promoting an exchange of information with European partners.

2) Update and enrich the good practices matrix already identified by IIIC South RFO “INCENDI” with new experiences and proceedings coming from EU Northern countries. In this framework concrete knowledge transfer will take place between all project partners, featuring feasibility and integration of the “imported elements” to their regional policy. To achieve their objective, the partner will work through the production of actions plans. In other words each regional partner will be invited to transfer or to receive and assign his own but concrete elements on forest fire intervention strategy and thus come up with an updated and fully operational action plan.

3) Identify and promote common intervention procedures in order to define a flexible and integrate model(s) that could be seized by any entity interested in forest and wild fire prevention and management.

4) Establish a network of institutional contacts and operational links on both fields: prevention and fires extinction. It is an evidence that an international and interregional effective cooperation, which overcomes the area of bilateral relations between borders countries constitutes a fundamental element of the regional strategies of the improvement of the prevention and the control of forest fires.

5) Try to reach a harmonization about the common frame of references in EU. The mid-term objective of this project is to create an extended and institutional network of regional expertise on wild forest risk prevention and management and thus become a referent network in the EU with subsequent political recommendation power on this issue.
